This better be a damn good sofa
One of the hardest things to pick has been our sofa. We wanted it to be antique, but not so antique that it was rickety or uncomfortable or smelly. Then suddenly, 3 different auction houses started showing a nearly identical George III-style camelback sofa, each upholstered a little differently. After we lost the first (a dark grey one) in an auction that went for over $1,000, we set our sights on one in Chicago. We were hesitant to bid on something so far away, but we felt like this design was exactly what our living was missing.
One click later and it was ours. Little did we know that a Chicago auction house was auctioning stuff out of Atlanta. Whoops! Either way, these aren’t the cities we’re in and we needed shipping. This is a first for us. Cross your fingers it all works out.

rugs, rugs, rugs, rugs, rugs
I hear the title of this post to the tune of “shots, shots, shots, shots, shots” — the nauseating chorus played at every dance club in existence. But this time, it’s a good thing because we went rug-CRAZY today. We knew we needed a bunch and that we wanted them to be inexpensive but the real deal.
We pictured the moment you first get out of bed and put your feet down on a cozy beautiful rug. We can now safely say we’re ready for you!
An estate sale addiction
March 31, 2019
When we realized we were days away from contract, we could finally do the one thing we’d been waiting for: begin to plan for the furniture that would fill our historic home. As newbies to the antique market, we bought a couple books and plunged in. First stop: an online auction, where our adherence to the historic dates 1760-1820 was weak at best. But we couldn’t resist one or two “modern” antiques for the kids.
Second stop: an estate sale. This home had clearly been filled by a collector who knew his stuff — a 94-year-old spitfire according to the estate sales team. We armed ourselves with little “sold” Post-Its, and walked away more than $1,000 poorer but with some of our favorite pieces to date.
Our last stop: a storage unit to hold our stuff for 60 days until closing. New homeownership … here we come!
first sight: Feb 2019

We first toured the farmhouse as buyers in February 2019 and put in an offer without visiting again. Imagine our nervousness when we returned for the inspection — only our second time seeing the place. Fortunately, its charm still matched our memories and the rest is history.
Here, some of the pics we took on that first visit that we continued to pour over for weeks afterward as we planned the space together:
